When should I have a bone density exam?

Osteoporosis affects 200 million people world wide and is the most common cause of fractures in adults.  But it can be effectively treated if diagnosed. The best way to determine bone density and fracture risk for osteoporosis is to have a bone mass measurement (also called bone mineral density or BMD test or DXA).

We are pleased to be able to offer our patients the latest technology in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.  The Hologic Bone Densitometer offers central hip and spine bone mass measurements, the gold standard of care available today.

In addition, your provider is able to conduct a full vertebral assessment if your symptoms indicate the need.

Your health care provider can help guide you as to whether or not you need a BMD test.

The BMD is recommended for:

  • Women over 65
  • Any postmenopausal woman with one or more risk factors
  • Any postmenopausal woman with a fracture
  • Vertebral (Spine) abnormalities
  • Patients who are taking, or who have taken long term steroid therapy
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Monitering the results of Osteoporosis treatment or prevention
